Education

(in generally reverse chronological order)

Part-time fully online studies in progress (simultaneously):

Date: Since January 2006

College: The Art Institutes

Program: A.A. in web and interactive media design, The Art Institute Online (currently) and The Art Institute of Portland (on campus, January 2006–March 2007). 48 credit hours completed to date from both campuses combined. GPAs: 4.0 (AI Online); 3.70 (Portland campus).

I already have earned a master's degree in photojournalism (1984) from the University of Missouri-Columbia plus I've pursued post-graduate studies at other colleges. Further, I already possess a number of years experience as a graphic designer (see the "Major work experience" section below). The reason that I enrolled in The Art Institute was to upgrade my job skills.

Coursework taken at AI Online (to date):

Currently (21 February 2008), I'm enrolled in courses in non-linear video editing (focused on storytelling) and project management.

Major work experience (Top)

(in reverse chronological order)

Date: January 2007

Website: www.school-for-church-webmasters.org (site to be launched in stages starting in 2008, depending upon funding)

This non accredited e-learning site that I am developing will offer more than 65 modules divided between a Basic and an Advanced Church Webmasters Certificate. The purpose of the school is to train volunteer church and parish webmasters in graphic design, web development, and web ministry.

Date: April 2004–present

Company: Great Church Websites, Inc.

Location: Portland, Oregon

Title: Founder and president (non-paid)

I founded Great Church Websites to find and showcase examples of excellence in the graphic design of church websites, as well as to provide other resources for church webmasters such as The Church Webmasters' Forum and design tips. (The website is not about religion but rather is a website design advocacy site.) To date, I have reviewed 13,000 church websites, choosing between 6% and 7% of them to include in an online, searchable (mySQL-powered) directory, titled The International Directory of Church Website Design. Currently (June 2007), I'm updating the directory by reviewing a purchased list of (another) 5,000 church website URLs. I expect to replace half or more of the entries in the Directory by the end of August 2007.

Date: October 1995–present

Client: Oregon Media Production Association (OMPA)

Location: Portland, Oregon

For this organization, I developed a Filemaker Pro relational database solution that facilitates OMPA's invoicing members for dues on a monthly basis. Also created a Filemaker Pro-based Electronic Performance Support System for efficient entry of listings for the Oregon Media Production Directory (OMPD), published annually by OMPA. I was the graphic designer and proofreader for five annual editions of the OMPD, from 1996 to 2000. My work for OMPA still includes indexing the directory using the Quark extension Sonar Bookends, as well as continuing consulting work.

Date: November 2005–July 2006

Client: Kaiser Permanente Northwest region

Location: Portland, Oregon

Title: Command Center support hotline operator (contract)

I provided help desk support by phone to more than 2,000 callers as a member of a team helping this large healthcare company migrate employees to Lotus Notes 6.5, a popular client-server email program.

Date: February 2003–April 2004

Company: Oregon Catholic Press (OCP)

Location: Portland, Oregon

Title: Missal/database assistant

OCP is the leading producer of worship materials (small books called "missals") for the U.S. Catholic market, as well as a major music publisher. My job was roughly one-third graphic design of the missals, using Quark Xpress; one-third proofing (copy editing) of the missals at various stages of production, including blueline; and one-third Filemaker Pro database programming. The primary objective of the latter job function was to develop techniques to pull data (text) out of databases and format the data "on the fly" in such a manner that text could be imported into Quark layouts pre-formatted as much as possible. I used Xdata, Xcatalog, and Xtags — all Quark extensions from Em Software — as well as Filemaker's own extensive text manipulation capabilities, to "dynamically publish" in this manner all or portions of seven OCP publications.

Date: June 2000–February 2003

Company: MEDIAmerica, Inc.

Location: Portland, Oregon

Title: Media production associate

This company publishes two consumer magazines, titled Oregon Business and Oregon Home; several tourist publications for the city of Portland and state of Oregon; and custom publications for various clients. As database programmer, I developed Filemaker Pro databases for data entry of PowerBook lists (company rankings by industry and region published in Oregon Business) and for the company’s real estate directories. I used Filemaker Pro to “dynamically publish” portions of these products. In addition, each year I laid out one or more of the company’s annual tourist publications or real estate directories, using Quark Xpress, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator. Graphic design duties included preparing Quark documents, photographs, and graphics for printing. I also served as the company’s I.T. director: I maintained a networked of Macintosh and Windows computers, a Windows NT server, and the phone system.

Date: August 1998–July 2000

Client: Eurock, Inc.

Location: Portland, Oregon

For this client, I created a Macromedia Director-based CD-ROM titled EUROCK: THE GOLDEN AGE. This is an interactive archive of 25 years of a magazine about European “progressive” music published by a Portland-based aficionado and importer of the music. This Director movie is largely based on the use of Lingo, Director’s built-in programming language. Many positive reviews of this commercially released product can be found on the client’s website, http://www.eurock.com.

Date: June 1998–April 2000

Client: Mini-Dish People, Inc. (no longer in business)

Location: Camas, Washington

For this client, I revised and expanded the company’s existing Filemaker customer database into a relational solution. In addition, I helped to maintain the company’s network of Macintosh computers.

Date: December 1997–February 2000

Client: New Heights Church

Location: Vancouver, Washington

For this client, I redesigned and added relational functionality to an existing Filemaker Pro membership database.

Date: October 1991–October 1994

Company: Worship Leader (magazine)

Location: Nashville, Tennessee

Title: Managing editor and designer

My professional career in the magazine and newspaper field culminated with my helping to launch, in early 1992, a magazine titled Worship Leader, which remains the leading magazine on Christian worship in America. I was managing editor and designer of the magazine during its first three years. I assigned articles to freelance writers, edited all copy, and art-directed the magazine. I also laid out the entire magazine using Quark Xpress. I also handled payment of fees to contributors.

Date: August 1988–May 1989

Company: Middle Tennessee State University

Location: Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Title: Instructor

Taught courses in computer graphic design, magazine design, typography, and printing processes in university journalism department.

Date: September 1985–March 1988

Company: Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Title: Copy editor and page designer

Designed page one of feature sections for this metropolitan newspaper, and edited copy as well.

Date: January 1984–September 1985

Company: The Ledger

Location: Lakeland, Florida

Title: Copy editor and page designer

Designed page one of feature sections for this metropolitan newspaper, and edited copy as well.

Other (miscellaneous) work experience (Top)

(in reverse chronological order)

Date: September 2004–present

Client: Whitman Communications

Location: Lebanon, New Hampshire

For this client, I have done several Xdata programming jobs to date. This work consisted primarily of Xdata prototype coding — programming, actually — along with sufficient graphic design work in Quark Xpress to ensure the design concept would work.

Date: July 2005

Client: Ginghamsburg Church

Location: Tipp City, Ohio

For this client, I ported a number of online sermons in static HTML format to the TYPO3 open-source content management system (CMS), to which the church is planning to convert all of its website(s).

Volunteer work experience (Top)

(in reverse chronological order)

Date: April 2007–present

Organization: Estates at North Riverwood Homeowners' Association

Location: Wood Village, Oregon

What I did: Chairman of the board

I serve as volunteer chairman of the board of directors of this homeowners' association.

Date: April 2002-October 2003

Ministry: Freedom Foursquare Church

Location: Portland, Oregon

What I did: Ministry leader overseeing audio production

I trained the soundboard operators and sometimes operated the soundboard myself for this new church. Also edited sermons before compressing them into RealAudio files for the church’s website.

Date: July 1999, May 2000

Ministry: Young Life

Location: Oregon

What I did: Volunteer digital video production

Videotaped activities at a camp for junior high students (summer 1999) run by this Christian youth organization, using my own digital video camera. Using Adobe Premiere and my computer (transported to the camp for this purpose), I edited each day’s footage into a three-minute video shown to the campers at night. Later I re-edited my footage and compiled it into a long-form videotape given to each camper.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, 2000, I videotaped a similar Young Life camp (for adult leaders this time), again editing my video footage on-site.
